Georgetown Downtown

A courthouse square that never got knocked down.

16 frames·Downtown Georgetown, TX

Downtown Georgetown is a working Victorian square — the county courthouse in the middle, two-story brick storefronts on all four sides, a neon theater marquee, and a tree on the lawn every December that people drive up from Austin to stand under. The period detail is real rather than restored-looking, which is why styled shoots keep coming here, and why a family session on the square dates itself only by what everyone is wearing.

Thirty minutes north of Austin. Angled parking on the square; we meet you on the corner.

The background is already in period.

Brick, painted signage, transom windows and a neon marquee. Put anybody in front of it in the right clothes and the picture stops being about the year it was taken.

Late light down the square, storefront lamps just coming on behind.
A 1940s-styled couple embracing in front of a pale blue door.
A blue service door on a limestone wall. Half the square is this good and none of it is a set.

December on the square

The tree is a genuine annual event.

A mother and father either side of their laughing young son, Christmas lights behind.
Parents and their small son cheek to cheek in front of a lit Christmas tree.
Three brothers and their father crouched together at the foot of a giant Christmas tree.
A father and two sons in front of a towering red and green Christmas tree.
A large family lined up in front of the giant Christmas tree on the Georgetown courthouse square, the courthouse behind them
Whole family, whole tree, courthouse behind. Book the first week of December before the queue starts.
My grandmother has a photograph of my mother in front of that same tree. Different tree, same corner.

And people get married here

A square is a very good aisle.

A groom in a black cowboy hat kissing his bride, who holds a deep red and teal bouquet, beside a white clapboard wall.
A couple embracing under warm string lights, her hand resting on his lapel.
A groom in a cowboy hat kissing his bride's cheek as she laughs in a white fur wrap.
A baby in a tweed newsboy cap held close on the Georgetown square
A young man in a newsboy cap and braces holding a baby in a matching cap on the Georgetown square
Expectant couple embracing on a city street at dusk

The theater marquee at dusk is the one light source on the square worth building a frame around.
