Downtown Austin

Twelve blocks that photograph better than most cities.

20 frames·Downtown Austin, TX

Congress Avenue marquees, the murals on the east side, glass towers throwing light back down onto the street, and pedicabs weaving through all of it. We shoot downtown constantly — headshots against warm concrete, campaigns on the move, groups at golden hour on the bridge. We know which blocks work at which hour, and which are a construction site this month.

We know the hour, not just the address.

Downtown light is entirely a function of which tower is throwing shade at what time. Turning up at the right block in the right half-hour is most of the job.

Chapter 01

Portraits against the city
