Bull Creek District Park

A creek that runs over rock, and children who cannot be kept out of it.

13 frames·Bull Creek District Park, Austin

Bull Creek comes down over limestone ledges in north Austin into shallow pools you can stand up in. The water is clear, the rock is flat enough to put a whole family on, and the low falls give you sound and movement without anybody having to swim. It is the park people book when they want the pictures to look like a good afternoon rather than a portrait session.

The water is the point.

Shallow, clear and moving. It gives you reflected light from below, a sound nobody has to be told to react to, and a reason for children to stop posing — which is the whole trick.

The falls do the composing. Stand a family in front of them and there is nothing left to arrange.

I had them in Christmas clothes and I still let them get in the water. You could tell that was going to be the good one.

The trees close in above the creek, so even at midday the light comes down soft and green. It is the most forgiving hour-of-day in any park on this list.
