Formal doesn't have to mean stiff — the best of these nights are the ones where the jazz trio sets up on the deck and nobody sits down. We get the posed family groupings done early and quickly, because they matter and because nobody wants to be pulled away twice. The rest of the night we simply follow.
Dressed, and outside
Austin formal usually ends up in a garden or beside a pool by nine. We light for that rather than fighting it.
Three generations in one backyard and everybody got a picture they liked. I still don't know when you took half of them.
The family ones
The frames that end up framed. We ask who matters before the night starts, so nobody important is missing at the end of it.
On the water
A boat is a small room that moves and changes light every four minutes. It is also where the group photo actually gets everyone in it.
