Zilker Botanical Gardens

A dozen gardens stacked on one hillside, ten minutes from downtown.

12 frames·Zilker Botanical Garden, Austin

Zilker Botanical Garden sits on the slope above Barton Creek, and it is really several gardens leaning on each other — the Taniguchi Japanese Garden with its arched bridges and koi ponds, the rose garden and its gazebo, beds of canna and oleander, and deep live oak shade over all of it. Admission is ticketed and the paths are narrow, so a session here is planned around where the light lands and how long each room stays empty.

Booking

Ticketed entry, and the bridges take one couple at a time. Worth the planning.

Somebody built this by hand.

Isamu Taniguchi laid out the Japanese garden here in his seventies and took no money for it. Three acres of ponds, stone and arched bridges that have been settling into the hillside ever since — and still the best twenty minutes of any session in this garden.

A garden bridge is wide enough for exactly two people and a photographer.

Room to room

Every path opens onto something different.

The beds turn over through the year, so the same corner is a different color in March and in September. Worth asking what is out before you book.
