Austin Boardwalk
A mile of Austin, out over the water.
8 frames·Ann and Roy Butler Boardwalk, Lady Bird Lake, Austin
The boardwalk is the one stretch of the hike-and-bike trail that leaves the bank entirely — a deck on pilings out over Lady Bird Lake with the skyline on one side and open water on the other. No cars, no driveways, nothing behind you but lake. It is the cleanest downtown background in the city and it costs nothing to stand there. We shoot proposals, grad portraits and families along it year round.

The deck sits out on pilings, so the background is water and towers and nothing else — no parked cars, no signage, no back of a building. Downtown, that is rarer than it sounds.

Mid-deck, late afternoon. Kayakers do the work of filling the water for you.

We walked out maybe two minutes and the whole city was just sitting there behind us.

Prom, on the railing, with the last of the sun off the water.
